Comfort food for dark days

This year, there is no summer where I live. There have been some warm and friendly days but now the weather has been rainy, stormy, cold and dark. That’s why my pictures look so pale. There’s absolutely no light spot in our flat! Usually I eat a lot of salads and fruits at this time of the year. This year I haven’t had many salads and instead have been using my stove and my oven pretty much. For example to fry some eggplants and peppers and mix them with gnocchi:
Or to make different kinds of patties and Italian beans. The patties are Aloo Chana Chat (from the book World Vegetarian Classics by Celia Brooks Brown) and Lentil Carrot Veggie Burgers from here (original recipe by the Compassionate Cooks Cookbook). I made the Aloo Chana Chat patties for the second time and they have become one of my favourite staples. I make a whole bunch and freeze them and they can be prepared and thrown on the grill as well. The beans are Sally Veganini’s Italian Beans. Sally I know, this might be a weird combination, but I liked it very much.
And here’s my first own homemade sushi. I didn’t know it was that easy to prepare! I cheated and used a regular starchy short grain rice instead of real sushi rice. Next time I will go for the real stuff. I think the best part of eating sushi is wasabi. I like this special kind of hotness, which only lasts for some seconds.

  1. All of your food looks so yummy! :)

We have had the same weird weather where I live. I hope we get to experience a real summer before it’s over!

  2. yummay! and your pictures look amazing, as always! I’ve never made sushi. should I be ashamed?

  3. I have extra lentils laying around and will have to try that patty recipe. The sushi looks ausgezeichnet!

I think that we’re receiving so much rain now because we had such a warm and early spring – at least the plants are being nourished, right?!

    Schoenes Wochenende!

  4. Oh, your sushi looks wonderful! All the food looks good, actually.

I know what you mean about the bad weather. We came back to Syracuse after being in Puerto Rico which was 90 degrees (~33 C) every day… and it was cold! And rainy! And dark! And so depressing. Fortunately, the last couple of days have turned hot and sunny, and I hope the same happens for you!

  5. wow this stuff looks so good! we’ve been eating a lot of gnocci this summer, too, so i’ll definitely have to try your fried eggplant and pepper idea. looks awesome! sorry about your lack of summer, btw. where i live we’re having a nicely mild summer, but it’s still pretty summery…

  6. i heard about the weather in your area from several people – i’m sorry that summer hasn’t come your way yet. your comfort food looks so wonderful!

  7. First time sushi? Looks very professional! (and yummy!) I’m a big wasabi fan. Such a special sort of bite to it.
