VeganMoFo – The Breakfast Post

Sorry for neglecting Veganmofo over the weekend. P. and I have been traveling a bit and although we had a laptop with us, I thought I could have little mofo free time, because this is exactly my 20th mofo post.

Now that I’ve written so much on lunches, dinners, and desserts, I thought I could also write a bit about breakfasts.

As Meg over at thesistersvegan has already said, breakfast is an important meal in Germany. The basis for most German breakfasts is either cereal or bread. Before I went vegan, I used to be a bread-breakfast person, which means that I would usually eat 1-2 slices of bread topped with cream cheese and cheese or butter and jam. From time to time, I would also have some müsli with milk and / or yoghurt.

When I became vegan, I turned into a cereal-breakfast person, often eating müsli or oats with soymilk and fresh fruit. After a while I also discovered porridge/oatmeal, which isn’t very common in Germany where it is referred to as “Haferschleim” (oat slime) by many people, and this isn’t even meant in a pejorative way. The term only shows how uncommon this preparation of oats is. Instead, they are often eaten raw as part of a müsli and with the addition of milk, yoghurt and fresh fruit.

When I went vegan, I found out that store-bought spreads and deli-slices for vegans can be quite expensive. That was the main reason why I turned into a cereal-breakfast person. I started to enjoy my everyday müsli which based on oats, flax, raisins and fresh fruit. After a while I started to experiment with different grains and seeds, too.

Of course I still eat bread too. Very often it is homemade. If you’re looking for tasty, versatile, creative, and simple bread recipes, check out Celine’s blog, where you can find them.

This is one of my favourites, the sauerkraut rye bread:

One of the first questions I get when people find out that I am a vegan is the “breakfast question” aka “What do you put on your bread?”. Dear omnis, this is the answer.

  9. Haha omg,

That’s so funny. I just found your blog on the internet (because I turned vegan 2 months ago, I’ve been plundering the internet for vegan recipes).
Anyways, I live in the Netherlands (hey neighbour), so that is exactly the same question I get from everyone here: “What do you put on your bread?”
We have oatmeal here too (havermout), not many people eat it either. I’ve also switched over from the cheese sandwiches to oatmeal. And if I do eat a sandwhich I love to put hummus on it :D

Well, in any case I’ll be checking your blog more often seeing as its easier to get “german” ingredients than “american” ones.

Tchüss (Ich habe Freitag eine deutsche Prüfung, deshalb probiere ich jetzt ein bisschen Deutsch zu schreiben :P )

  10. I love breakfast – it’s my favorite meal of the day! Especially the buckwheat and pineapple breakfast looks amazing.

I used to eat my oats raw too, when I was little, but now I prefer them as eh… slime. ;-)

  11. Mmm…I wish I could come over for breakfast now! I love the savory spreads and tofu stir fry.

  12. How does one make homemade soy yogurt? Is it easy? Do I need any special equipment?

  13. your breakfasts can come hang out at my house any time, Mihl. I hope you had fun while traveling!

  14. i too LOVE breakfast. it’s rare i get to eat it in the morning (i keep odd hours). i usually eat my breakfast for dinner. nothing wrong with that. wonder if i can get fresh figs this time of year???????

AND there is NOTHING like homemade bread. NOTHING

  15. Mmmmm I adore fresh Figs!!
That bread looks so good – you are such a good cook!

  16. Beautiful post. I have never thought to put fresh figs on muesli and now you are making me think I should try it. The comment about oat slime cracks me up. I think I may have to adopt that phrase. I’m very interested in your soy yogurt like the others because I have found most of the soy yogurt in the grocery store to be blech!

  17. I love breakfast. It is my favorite meal of the day. A day without breakfast is a bad day. The food you make looks terrific.

  18. Now that I think about it…oatmeal does resemble oat slime. Anyhoo, I adore breakfast and your post just made me crave a huge bowl of cereal!

  19. Shelly, Just Desserts, and Kelly: I will write a blog post about hommade soy yoghurt, soon. I promise.

Tina – Danke für Deinen Besuch und viel Glück mit der Prüfung!

  20. You eat quite a variety of foods for breakfast! I often feel like I eat the same thing all the time. I am so impressed that you make you own bread all the time!
